Welcome To Country Cairns

Welcome to the Gimuy/Cairns homelands of the Yidinydji people, where we invite you to experience the ancient tradition of a Welcome to Country ceremony. This ceremony is a deeply meaningful and significant part of Aboriginal culture, as it acknowledges and respects the traditional owners of the land and their ancestors. The Yidinydji people have a rich history and connection to this land that spans thousands of years, and the Welcome to Country ceremony is a powerful way to honor this legacy.

At Minjil, we take pride in incorporating gift-giving as a traditional component of the Welcome to Country ceremony when visitors come to Gimuy-Barra (Cairns). This practice is unique to our community, and we hold it in high regard. The Welcome to Country is a cultural and spiritual invitation, inviting visitors to connect with the land, its people, and its traditions. As such, we believe that gift-giving is a meaningful gesture of respect and appreciation for the land, the community, and the culture of Minjil.

Through storytelling, song, dance, and ritual, the Yidinydji people will share their culture and traditions with you, providing a unique and authentic insight into their way of life. We invite you to join us in celebrating and preserving this important aspect of Australian Indigenous culture.

Each Aboriginal tribe has a unique way of sharing Welcome to Country. However, regardless of which tribe, the words and ceremonies area designed to welcome guests to our beautiful Aboriginal lands.

Our culturally significant ceremonies are ideal for many different events in Cairns.
